Breaking The Rules: Victor Moscoso Biography

Overview:

This accordion-fold booklet encapsulates the essence and biography of psychedelic graphic designer Victor Moscoso. I instantly fell in love with Moscoso’s work and rebellious design philosophies.
Audience:

Those who enjoy psychedelic art, design, and culture.

Process + Outcomes:

I began conducting research about Moscoso’s childhood, pursuit of education, and early careers in design. Moscoso had several Bauhaus and psychedelic influences that shaped his opinions on the rules of design. After mastering the Bauhaus design principles, Moscoso became fond of "breaking the rules," in the psychedelic industry.
Moscoso’s design work and philosophies display a distinct level of duality and fearlessness. In order to showcase these ideas, I created a two-sided accordion fold booklet to mimic an instruction manual.

The layout and style project ideas of learning rules, and flipping it over allows for new ideas to stem from the rules. The front informs viewers about Moscoso’s early years, schooling, and strong influence of Bauhaus designer Josef Albers. The simple color palette and grid allow viewers to experience the design principles that Moscoso learned to defy. The back displays his work and life as he entered the scene of psychedelic design.
The colors on this side vibrate and words bleed onto other pages, as one of Moscoso’s most important design traits was to use, “vibrating colors.” These two contrasting sides show Moscoso's influences, growth, and rise to fame as an established psychedelic designer.
