The Affordable Art of a Homemade Latte

Overview:

The Affordable Art of a Homemade Latte is a dynamically informative video on how to make a delicious latte at home. Making my coffee with a moka pot is a uniquely important part of my morning routine. A moka pot is an Italian, instant espresso machine that’s used on a stovetop.
Moka pots also have unique, stackable pieces that allow the coffee to brew upwards and be poured out of the top. Recently, I’ve learned to appreciate the moka pot’s distinct forms, features, and brewing process. My video’s balance between informational dialogue, condensed typography, and down-to-earth atmosphere create an engaging, coffee-based experience.

Audience:

Those who enjoy coffee and want to learn about a unique coffee making process.

Process + Outcomes:

I started this process by conducting research on my moka pot and how I used it each day. Breaking my coffee routine down into a step-by-step process allowed me to examine the small details of the routine that I often overlooked.
This step was also crucial in allowing me to picture each step in the process through a motion-based lens. I was then able to create a script and detailed walkthrough of each step with potential motion, sound effects, and typography could be integrated into my storyboards and video.

I created an in-depth moodboard and documented a variety of still images that set the scene of my video. This included color grading, composition, and scale. I used fast-paced macro cinematography that allows for an immersive viewing experience. The color grading aims to display a level of coziness and sophistication that resemble your local coffee shops. After carefully scouting these images, I designed a series of style frames that explored type integration within my scenes. My type choices stemmed from a moka pot’s unique features that are sometimes only seen up close.

After several explorations using type, hierarchy, and composition, I created a storyboard and animatic video that emphasized my stylistic motion approach. Each frame contained speed, duration, and scale of the items in my footage and how they interacted with my chosen type.
Creating the animatic was extremely helpful, as it allowed me to establish pacing and flow between each important scene in my video. When I began filming, this served as a strong concept and plan of action to help further guide my design choices.
